An energy-based analysis framework for soil structure interaction systems

Presented is an energy-based analysis and design framework for soil structure interaction system. Theoretical formulation based on thermodynamics engineering mechanics calculating energy dissipation in structural elastic plastic finite elements presented discussed. The importance of incorporation free energy, that ensures nonnegative incremental dissipation, also known as the second law thermodynamics, emphasized. For application to practical problems, implemented Real-ESSI Simulator visualized using ParaView. In order illustrate proposed framework, a model composed reinforced concrete frame structure, underlying soil, soil-foundation interface developed analyzed. Elastic-plastic material viscous, Rayleigh damping parameters are calibrated represent typical realistic cases. Spatial time distribution density analyzed Locations with high used proxy damage identified. addition, locations within interface, dissipate seismic before it reaches Influences input motion scale variation system performance investigated. It shown traditional displacement-based parameters, such peak displacement maximum interstory drift ratio, could underestimate change when different or used.
